2008 E3 Awards

Hello and welcome to Voodoo Extreme’s Best of E3 2008 awards. While the show isn’t as big as it used to be, there was still plenty to see, and even judge for a little feature like this. I hope you enjoy reading these awards as much as I enjoyed going to parties and drinking all week long. Long live E3!

Best Action Game (PC)
Left 4 Dead
Developer: Valve Software
Publisher: Valve Software
Release Date: Nov. 08
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: 360

Why it won: Left 4 Dead was entertaining on many levels. It mixes the camaraderie of a four-player co-op experience with intense heat-pounding action, immersive audio and visual effects and of course – an awesome post-apocalyptic zombie/survival movie inspired setting. The gameplay is simple, fluid, and elegant. Left 4 Dead could be the sleeper hit of the year on the PC.

WMV HD (156MB) / Flash SD (53MB)

Best Action Game (Console)
Gears of War 2
Developer: Epic Games
Publisher: Microsoft
Release Date: Nov. 08
Shown at E3 on the: 360
Also Appearing on the: 360

Why it won: We might not have gotten the two-dollar demo of the single player game at E3 from Microsoft, but Epic was nice enough to get us into the Gears of War 2 after party for a little hands-on multiplayer time. I’m not the biggest console multiplayer person in the world, but if you liked Gears of War, I think it’s safe to say Gears of War 2 will be right up your alley. The new gameplay modes are a lot of fun and the new maps will feel like a refreshing breeze to veteran players and noobs alike. Gears of War 2 is badder than ever.

Best RPG (PC)
Dragon Age
Developer: Bioware
Publisher: EA
Release Date: Feb 2009
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: PC

Why it won: BioWare is finally back making the sort of stuff we expect: Fantasy themed computer role-playing games! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Dragon Age looks awesome.

Flash HD (118MB) / Flash SD (37MB)

Best RPG (Console)
Fallout 3
Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda
Release Date: Oct. 08
Shown at E3 on the: 360
Also Appearing on the: PC & PS3

Why it won: No talky presentation or lecture to suffer through here. We actually got to play Fallout 3 for the first time at e3 this year. It was only for 30 minutes but I’ll take playing a game over listening to someone yammering about it any day of the week. Comfortable controls, quirky Fallout branded humor, and bloom-tastic visuals made for a very entertaining half-an-hour to say the least.

Best Massively Multiplayer Game
Warhammer Online
Developer: Mythic
Publisher: EA
Release Date: Oct 08
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: 360

Why it won: I was surprised at how few massively multiplayer games there were at E3 this year, but consensus was that Warhammer Online was by far the best of the lot. I was a big Dark Age of Camelot player, so here’s to hoping that Mythic hits one out of the park when WAR begins this Fall. Hopefully they get the shadow effects in by then so people will stop making fun of the screenshots.

Best Music/Rhythm Game
Rock Band 2
Developer: Harmonix
Publisher: MTV Games
Release Date: Sept. 08
Shown at E3 on the: 360
Also Appearing on the: PS2, PS3 & Wii

Why it won: The most fun I had playing anything at E3 this year was with Rock Band 2, but considering how much these music games cost to play, that’s to be expected. You could almost buy a new computer for the price of a compete band set. With that said: Rock Band 2 is going to rock your cock off!

Best Strategy Game
Empire: Total War
Developer: Creative Assembly
Publisher: SEGA
Release Date: Nov. 08
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: PC

Why it won: I was already a big fan of Total War’s Epic land wars. Slap realistic sea battles into the mix and I’m in strategy heaven. Empire: Total War’s graphics were nothing to sneeze at either.

Flash HD (80MB) / Flash SD (26MB)

Best Graphics
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky
Developer: GSC Game World
Publisher: Deep Silver
Release Date: Sept. 08
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: PC

Why it won: The best graphics award this year was hard to call. On one hand, we had Crysis Warhead. On the other, we have S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky. Warhead’s graphics looked exactly like Crysis (maybe a little watered down so they ran faster) while Clear Sky showed a significant visual improvement over S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s visual prowess. Crysis Warhead crashing on me in the middle of playing didn’t help either. Clear Sky’s technological feature set is extremely impressive as well and the demo looked absolutely fabulous.

WMV HD (555MB) / WMV HD (193MB) / Flash HD (192MB) / Flash SD (61MB)

Best Artistic Design
MadWorld
Developer: PlatinumGames
Publisher: SEGA
Release Date: March 09
Shown at E3 on the: Wii
Also Appearing on the: Wii

Why it won: Like comic books? Enjoy over-the-top, gratuitous violence? Prepare to become happy as MadWorld has all of that plus oh-so much more. The bottom line is that any developer who can make a Wii game look that good deserves a firm pat on the ass. Great job!

Best Multiplayer Game
Left 4 Dead
Developer: Valve
Publisher: Valve
Release Date: Nov. 08
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: 360

Why it won: Left 4 Dead is really, really, really fun. Honest. If any game has a chance to topple Counter-Strike this is it. Hopefully we can play as The Infected next time and kill those pesky survivors.

Best Console Game
Fallout 3
Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda
Release Date: Oct. 08
Shown at E3 on the: Console (cough)
Also Appearing on the: 360, PC & PS3

Why it won: Probably the easiest decision I’ve made all day.

WMV HD (153MB) / Flash SD (39MB)

Best PC Game
Dragon Age
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: EA
Release Date: Feb. 09
Shown at E3 on the: PC
Also Appearing on the: PC

Why it won: It doesn’t warhammer gold rhyme with Bore.

Quicktime HD (144MB) / Flash SD (22MB)

Game of the Show
Fallout 3
Developer: Bethesda
Publisher: Bethesda
Release Date: Oct. 08
Shown at E3 on the: 360
Also Appearing on the: PC, PS3

Why it won: It won the reader’s choice poll by a landslide. Yay! Plus, I kinda liked it too…

If anyone knows how to bring a fresh approach to the MMO genre, it’s Mythic Entertainment. There are other developers who have released more (and more successful) MMOs, but no one else is quite as prepared to create a fully-realized realm-versus-realm experience as the creators of Dark Age of Camelot. And no world is quite so suited for that treatment than Games Workshop’s Warhammer fantasy setting. When the two companies came together to create Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, we knew we were warhammer gold in for something special.

Happily, every fresh viewing of the game has only increased our anticipation. Sure, we’re pretty tired of Elves and Orcs, but the Warhammer world warps the standard stereotypes and includes enough original elements that it stands apart from the usual fantasy settings. The gameplay also continues to impress us, with a sure and satisfying focus on realm-versus-realm struggle that eases players into competition with each other and culminates in massive wars for control of each faction’s capital city.

With a fresh but familiar setting and an undeniably compelling game design, Warhammer Online is sure to help us vent our Waaaghs!

Electronic Arts Inc., the world’s leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment and GigaMedia Ltd, a major provider of online entertainment software and services, announced today that the companies have entered into an agreement to launch and operate WARHAMMER® ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING™ (WAR) in Taiwan.

Taipei – Jan 31, 2008 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), the world’s leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment and GigaMedia Ltd (NASDAQ: GIGM), a major provider of online entertainment software and services, announced today that the companies have entered into an agreement to launch and operate WARHAMMER® ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING™(WAR) in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Based on Games Workshop’s Warhammer fantasy universe, the online game features next generation Realm vs. Realm™ (RvR) game play that will immerse players in a world of perpetual conflict.

The agreement between EA and GigaMedia also aims to provide warhammer gold the ultimate MMORPG gaming experience for players in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Working closely with the EA Mythic development team, GigaMedia will provide marketing, community management, technical support, and customer service functions. Further details concerning the release schedule will be announced in the months ahead. Last November, EA also announced its partnership with GigaMedia to operate NBA Street Online in the same territories.

Warhammer Online is currently in development at EA Mythic, the studio which first gained worldwide critical acclaim for revolutionizing online gaming with the award winning Dark Age of Camelot™. WAR’s Realm vs. Realm game play has players joining one of six Armies - the obstinate Dwarfs, the noble High Elves, the loyal humans of the Empire, the savage Greenskins, the corrupt Dark Elves or the marauding human worshippers of Chaos - to experience the truly epic nature of war. Warhammer Online also features an innovative Public Quest system and a massive City Siege campaign that allows players to sack and pillage an enemy capital.

Arthur M. Wang, Chief Executive Officer of GigaMedia, said, “We are pleased and honored to become EA’s operating partner on another groundbreaking online game. GigaMedia will bring this most anticipated MMORPG title, WARHAMMER ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING, into Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. “It is a privilege to work with GigaMedia to bring our game to Asia’s vibrant and growing population of MMORPG fans”, says Mark Jacobs, VP and General Manager of EA Mythic. “Warhammer Online is widely anticipated in both North America and Europe. With Giga Media as a partner, we expect that Asian gamers will have a lot to look forward to.”

EA MYTHIC REVEALS THE WARHAMMER® ONLINE: AGE OF RECKONING™ CRAFTING SYSTEM

Highly Anticipated MMORPG Introduces Innovative System that Allows Crafters to Create Potions, Talismans, and More to Aid them on the Field of Battle

Fairfax, VA – May 29, 2008 – EA Mythic, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), unveiled new details for the crafting system in Warhammer® Online: Age of Reckoning™ (WAR). With two crafting abilities (Apothecary and Talisman Making) and four supporting gathering skills (Cultivating, Magical Salvaging, Scavenging and Butchering), the MMORPG incorporates an innovative crafting system to aid players in their fights on the battlefield’s of WAR.

“Crafting is a beloved MMORPG element for many players, however, it can often feel like an unnecessary addition to the game,” said Mark Jacobs, general manager of EA Mythic and WAR’s lead game designer. “The crafting system I’ve envisioned for WAR is innovative, fun and doesn’t require hours and hours of grinding materials, items or recipes in order to succeed. It is a system that is tied directly to your Realm’s ongoing war effort whether you are a player who loves PvE, RvR or simply crafting in general.”

The Apothecary crafting ability allows players to create all manner of useful potions, lotions and powders to heal, enhance stats, or cause damage to others. By combining various ingredients, players will even have the opportunity to “design” their own potions according to their needs. The second crafting ability, Talisman Making, will allow players to make useful items imbued with magic powers to be worn by a character.

WAR’s gathering skills produce the raw materials required for Apothecary and Talisman Making:

* Players can train themselves in Cultivating, and plant seeds and spores in order to harvest weeds and fungi, components frequently used in Apothecary creations.
* Magical Salvaging lets players break down magical items, converting them into fragments and essences that can be used in the crafting of Talismans.
* Scavenging and Butchering are used to collect unseen resources off of the corpses of slain creatures - Scavenging allows players to recover hidden items from more intelligent creatures, while Butchering allows players to collect meat, skin and bones from non-sentient beasts.

Crafting in WAR is not about grinding for raw materials to create beneficial items, but about using developmental processes that don’t interfere with the Realm vs. Realm™ battles that are central to WAR. For example, a character with Cultivating training can continue to grow weeds and fungi even while laying siege to the enemy’s city.

For the first time ever, players can engage in Public Quests™ - multi-stage, communal quests to be completed by allied players fighting together against overwhelming odds. They can also embark on an epic quest to complete the Tome of Knowledge and unlock Warhammer lore, detailed monster information, new abilities, rewards, and major story plotlines. Drawing from a quarter century of highly detailed source material, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning will bring Games Workshop’s fantasy world to life in a way that will allow players to create characters destined for great deeds on the field of battle.
